Breaking Ice

After breaking ice on the Great Lakes for over 60 years, the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw had earned a rest. But not before one last mission to break ice out of the commercial shipping lanes.

Take a ride aboard Great Lakes heavy ice breakers in this stunningly visual documentary powerfully told by Mort Crim. Originally captured in High Definition (HD), you will experience the huge contrast between the World War II veteran Mackinaw (WAGB 83) and her 21st century, ultra-modern replacement, the new Mackinaw (WLBB20). Watch as the “Mighty Mac” breaks ice for the last time in the picturesque St. Mary’s River and through ice-choked Whitefish Bay. See the crew of the new Mackinaw literally put this 100-million-dollar marvel to the test in ice over 2 feet thick in Green Bay.

Packed with dynamic visuals from beginning to end, BREAKING ICE tells the entire story of Mackinaw, including the unique, emotional decommissioning ceremony held in her home port of Cheboygan, Michigan…a lasting tribute to a Great Lakes legend.
