My Family’s Kris Marshall scoops Best Comedy Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards 2002

Double triumph for hit makers DLT Entertainment

(London December 19 2002) Independent production and distribution company DLT Entertainment is celebrating this week after Kris Marshall won the Best Comedy Newcomer title at Saturday’s British Comedy Awards 2002 and the series he stars in, My Family , signed off with ratings that regularly topped 11 million during the series.

Kris beat off stiff competition from Dave Spikey (Phoenix Nights) and Leigh Francis (Bo Selecta ) to pick up the title for his portrayal of Nick Harper, the eldest son of Ben and Susan, played by Robert Lindsay and Zoë Wanamaker.

The show ended its current run last week (Thursday 12 December) after 13 weeks, and was consistently ranked in the Top Ten rated entertainment shows on BBC One every week, and peaked at 12.6 million.

My Family - produced in association with Rude Boy Productions – one of the BBC’s most successful home-grown sitcoms in recent years, made a move mid-series to Thursday nights, after repeatedly impressing audiences on Fridays, to make way for the reality TV show, Fame Academy.

On Fridays, My Family , regularly triumphed against ITV blockbuster films and celebrity based shows – I’m A Celebrity – Get Me Out Of Here and Celebrity Fit Club, outperforming its period by 32%. On Thursdays, it eclipsed one of the stalwarts of the ITV schedule, The Bill, each week, outperforming it by 17%.

DLT Entertainment’s Vice President, Don Taffner Jr, is delighted that Kris has scooped such a prestigious award for his performance in My Family , and that the show has been such a hit with the viewing public.

“We’re thrilled that Kris has been rewarded for his consistently superb performances as unemployable Nick. He has great talent and is incredibly professional. We’re proud to have such talent on the show, especially working alongside such established greats as Robert and Zoë.

“This series of My Family has been a constant hit with viewers as the ratings show. And with the double boost of our Sunday repeat we’ve attracted an average of nearly 12 million for each episode, making it one of the most watched programmes on TV after East Enders and Coronation Street .”

DLT Entertainment’s track record in comedy is not just a one-off, as they are also responsible for another BBC favourite, As Time Goes By, produced in association with their sister company, Theatre of Comedy.

Consistently winning its time slot in its final series broadcast earlier this year on BBC One, the hit sitcom starring Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer averaged nearly 6m viewers and often finished as the top rated entertainment programme for the week.

It ran for nine series and went out on a high in August 2002, and with My Family already in production on Series 4, it looks likely that DLT Entertainment will continue to celebrate success in the future.
