DLT Entertainment to co-produce The Academy starring Sir Ian McKellen

London 5 October 2009. Award-winning production and distribution company, DLT Entertainment, today announced The Academy, a wickedly funny mockumentary based on the fictional Clapham Academy of Creative Arts (CACA).

The cast is lead by Golden Globe-winning Sir Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, The Prisoner) and DLT Entertainment is planning to preview part of the programme to broadcasters at this year’s MIPCOM. The company is co-producing the show with 2act Productions.

The Academy allows cameras into the inner sanctum of The Clapham Academy of Creative Arts (CACA) and the programme features a stellar cast: Jonathan Hyde (The Mummy, Dinotopia), Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who), and Frances Barber (The Street, Law and Order UK) who plays herself.

The show follows the story of a struggling South London drama school run by Murray McKellen (Sir Ian’s fictional brother) CACA used to be an excellent, if small, establishment,, but in recent years, especially following a global recession, it has started to fall into disarray. The faculty (McKellen, Hyde and McCoy) comes up with an ingenious plan to allow a documentary film crew to capture the school at work, with the hope this will bring notoriety and much needed funds.

Don Taffner Jr, President of DLT Entertainment commented: “The production has secured an incredible cast, with some of the UK’s most established and well known actors. When Humphrey Barclay came to me with the concept, I knew straight away this was something we had to be involved in. Any broadcaster would be crazy not to snap this show up.”

Humphrey Barclay, Producer, said: “Ian’s talent for comedy is delicious. This is the first time he has chosen to do a comedy series, and he has turned down everything else to play his wayward, elegant, hilarious alter ego, his fictional brother Murray, dedicated to the survival of a shoe-string Drama School. The brilliant young writer and creator Peter Hinton has won the trust of a superlative cast, and the result is a collector’s item: witty, satirical and not to be missed.”

The programme, which all parties hope will become a series, is produced by Humphrey Barclay, former Controller of Comedy at LWT and John Bartlett (My Family), and is created and directed by Peter Hinton. Don Taffner Jr, is the Executive Producer on the show.

DLT Entertainment has enjoyed terrific success for more than four decades with legendary hits including the multi award-winning sitcom My Family which recently celebrated its 100th episode. Other credits include As Time Goes By, Three’s Company, Too Close For Comfort, and Meet My Folks. DLT has also built a reputation as a top distribution company, selling its own shows across the globe as well as representing productions of third party producers.

The company has recently announced commissions of My Family series 10 and 11, as well as an exciting joint venture with Waddell Media. The two companies will be working together, pooling their expertise and production knowledge with a plan to produce comedies for UK and international broadcasters and help increase their commitment to production in the regions.

Jon-Barrie Waddell, Creative Director of Waddell Media who heads up the New York office says “The new partnership evolved through Waddell Media’s continued expansion in the US with a range of new synergies and deals coming out of our recently opened New York office. Our long-term goal is to build relationships to exploit the best creative and production talent in Ireland, not just for the UK but the international market.”
